Choosing outfits for a photo session can feel like the most stressful part — but it doesn’t have to be. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s confidence. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in every image.
Whether you’re planning a family session, maternity portraits, a newborn lifestyle session, or a cozy couples shoot, here’s how to build outfits that photograph beautifully and feel like you.
TIP 1: Coordinate — Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in identical jeans and white shirts. Instead, think cohesive, not copy-paste.
- Choose 2–4 complementary colors.
- Mix textures and layers rather than identical fabrics.
- Start with one person’s outfit (often Mom or the boldest piece), then build around it.
The goal is to look like you belong together — not like you’re wearing uniforms.

TIP 2: Comfort = Confidence (Especially with Kids)
If you’re tugging at your sleeves or worried about wrinkles, it will show. Choose clothing that lets you sit, snuggle, walk, lift kids, or lay across a blanket without stress.
- Skip anything too tight, stiff, or sheer.
- Choose fabrics that move well — linen, cotton, knits, gauze, flowy dresses.
- If your toddler hates buttons — ditch them. If you never wear heels — don’t start now.
The most beautiful images are not posed — they’re felt. Comfort makes that possible.

TIP 3: Neutrals + Muted Tones Always Photograph Well
You never have to stick to only beige — but soft, earthy, and muted tones tend to photograph best in natural light.
Great choices include:
- Warm neutrals: cream, tan, olive, rust, oatmeal, honey
- Cool muted tones: sage, dusty blue, charcoal, mauve
- Rich accent colors: mustard, deep wine, terracotta, navy
- Stick to a color pallet- this will help you to keep everyone coordinating without being too matchy.
PRO TIP- Still not sure of what color pallet to go with? Let your home be your inspiration! Most of my families and couples choose to order prints. Why not choose clothing that coordinates with your home's aesthetic, too? That will guarantee those prints are going to look amazing hung on the wall!
Sample Color Pallets

Warm neutrals
Soft, warm neutrals feel timeless and light, making them perfect for photos with natural light. These colors are versatile for any session — newborn, family, or maternity — and create a cozy, airy feel that lets your connection shine.
Cool & Calm
Soft, cool colors evoke a serene, relaxed vibe that works beautifully for lifestyle, newborn, and maternity sessions. These tones help create a calm, airy feel in photos while still offering subtle color interest.
Earthy& Muted
Earthy, muted colors bring warmth and depth without being overpowering. These tones are ideal for outdoor family sessions or fall-inspired photos, and they complement nature beautifully while keeping the focus on you and your loved ones.
Rich & Deep
Deep, rich colors add drama and elegance without feeling harsh. Perfect for fall or winter sessions, or for anyone who wants a bold but refined look, these tones make your photos feel cozy, intimate, and full of character.

Session-Specific Outfit Tips
For Family Sessions:
Let kids be kids. Avoid logos or neon colors. Add layers like cardigans, suspenders, tights, or boots for dimension.
For Maternity Sessions:
Choose a dress or outfit that highlights your bump without feeling restrictive. Flowy skirts, wrap dresses, or fitted knit gowns are gorgeous for movement.
For Newborn Sessions (In-Home):
Think soft and cozy. Avoid heavy or dark colors that distract from baby. Light neutrals and relaxed fabrics keep the focus on connection. Mamas, opt for a soft lounge set rather than 'leaving the house' clothes. Dads, aim for clean and comfortable- A Henley or sweater paired with clean or solid lounge pants will match mom and baby perfectly.
For Couples Sessions:
Contrast textures — think flowy dress + denim, linen shirt + knit sweater. Your outfits should feel like a date you planned with intention. Fellas, ditch the cargo shorts or pants and opt for clean chinos instead. Ladies, skip the minidress or miniskirt and go for the flowy dress or skirt instead. The more you feel comfortable moving around, the more fun and relaxed your photos will look!

TIP 4: Movement Matters More Than Perfection
I’ll guide you through flattering poses and natural movement — so don’t stress about every wrinkle or strand of hair.
Think less portrait, more interaction. Twirling. Tickling. Walking. Rocking. Hugging. Whispering.
Your wardrobe should enhance the connection — not distract from it.
Still Not Sure What to Wear?
After booking, I’m happy to help you style your session — you can even text me outfit options. I want you to show up feeling calm, confident, and excited, not second-guessing.
