Planning a lifestyle newborn session at home can feel a little intimidating—how tidy does the house need to be? Will your baby cooperate? The truth is, your home doesn’t need to be perfect, and your little one doesn’t need to be perfectly posed. What matters most is capturing the real, everyday moments that make your family unique.
Why Prep Matters (But Doesn’t Need to Be Stressful)
A little preparation goes a long way — both for your home and for your little one. Today, we’ll start with tips for getting your home ready, then share how to help your baby feel relaxed, comfortable, and ready for their session.

PREPARING YOUR HOME
My Role in helping Creating a Beautiful Space
Here’s the part I really want you to know: prepping your home is not all on you.
Helping create a cozy, photogenic environment is part of my role as your photographer.
Before your session, I’ll ask you to send me a few photos of your home. This gives me a sense of where the windows are, where the light falls, and which spaces will work best. That way, you only need to tidy the areas we’ll actually use — not the entire house.
When I arrive, I always do a few test shots to see how the light really looks in camera. I also check for distractions and help move things out of frame if needed — maybe a space heater, a laundry basket, or a toy pile. I joke that I’m a “professional shover of things” because I’m not afraid to slide a chair over, take something off the wall, or shift a piece of furniture slightly if it helps the light shine beautifully on your family.
I move things as little as possible, but I’m also not afraid to step in when needed. My goal is to make your space work for you so you don’t feel the pressure of having it all perfect.

Declutter Strategically (Only the Spaces We’ll Use)
Because we’ll already know the best light-filled areas, you only need to focus on those rooms. Usually that means:
The master bed for snuggly family photos
The living room or family room
The nursery or kids’ room
A simple trick: toss any extra clutter into a laundry basket and slide it into a closet or corner. Done.
Let In The LIght
Light is the number one factor in beautiful in-home photos. You can help by:
- Opening up the curtains and blinds
- Turning off overhead lights (I know, sounds counterintuitive, but they actually create harsh, yellow tones. Rule of thumb: windows open, lights off.
- I'll adjust as needed once I arrive to make sure we're all set!
Don’t stress about chasing the perfect light — that’s my job. I've got this, I promise.

Cozy, Personal Touches Make All the Difference
Your photos don’t need elaborate staging. A chunky blanket on the bed, a well-loved quilt, a favorite mug of coffee, or your toddler’s lovey all add warmth and personality to your images.
These little details are what turn photos into memories.
Mindset Shift: Your Real Life Is Worth Documenting
One day, you’ll miss the baby bottles on the counter, the dog hair that shines in the sunshine, the toys scattered across the floor. These things are signs of your real life right now — and that’s worth remembering.
Instead of aiming for perfection, let’s aim for peaceful, cozy, and true-to-you.

PREPARING YOUR NEWBORN

Part of the reason we try to schedule newborn sessions within the first two weeks is that babies typically love nothing more than a full tummy, a clean diaper, and cuddling close with mom and dad — and the good news is, that’s the majority of what we do during your session.
Life with a newborn can feel overwhelming and unpredictable, and that’s completely normal. We always prioritize your baby’s needs first — diaper changes, feedings, soothing, and cuddle breaks are all part of the session. Having a simple plan in place helps set us up for success as best as we can. The goal is simply to capture real moments while keeping your little one relaxed, cozy, and cared for throughout the session.
Timing and Feeding
Indoor lifestyle sessions are usually scheduled when the light in your home is at its best—typically early in the day, around mid-morning.
To help your baby feel calm and content for photos, I usually recommend waiting at least two hours before the session after the last feeding, then feeding your little one right before the session begins.
If they have a special outfit you'd like them to wear, changing them into their outfit before feeding right before session time allows them to fully relax once they have a full tummy, making it easier to capture those sweet, sleepy moments.
Example Morning Schedule
Of course, every newborn is different. But here’s an example of what your morning might look like if your session is scheduled for 11 am:
- 8:40 am: Begin feeding baby, let them fully fill their tummy , and try hard not to feed baby again until closer to your session time if at all possible
- 10:40 am: Wake baby for next feeding, change diaper and outfit if desired, then begin feeding again
- 11:00 am: I arrive and set up my gear while baby is finishing feeding
- 11:15 am: Baby is full, content, and ready for a few sleepy, relaxed minutes of photos
From there, we’ll make the most of whatever time your baby gives us, capturing special moments, tiny details, and precious memories for your full gallery.
We Don't Pause Photos, We Document Moments
A little fuss or grumpiness is completely normal! Sometimes we can capture an entire gallery in 20 minutes or less by working with the windows of contentment your baby gives us. Lifestyle sessions are all about documenting real life — from crying, yawning, and sleepy stretches to the little smiles we’re watching for — which means nursing, feeding, diaper changes, bath time, and playtime are all naturally part of your session. We don’t need to pause or wait for the diaper change or feeding to be over, we document them as they naturally happen, creating a complete and authentic story of this season in your life. (Side note: I always prioritize your comfort and privacy. Whether or not you want nursing moments photographed, I work with you to make sure you feel completely supported and confident throughout your session.)
